AI Tokens
What Are AI Tokens
Tokens can be thought of as pieces of words that an AI model uses as input (prompt) and in its answer (completion). Both the input & output is broken down into tokens. Processing input & output tokens have an associated cost, however we only count the output tokens towards a user's Studylab token balance.
Here are some helpful rules of thumb for understanding tokens in terms of lengths:
1 token ~= 4 chars in English
100 tokens ~= 75 words
1-2 sentence ~= 30 tokens
1 paragraph ~= 100 tokens
1,500 words ~= 2048 tokens
Prompt & Completion Tokens
Prompt tokens are the tokens that you input as part of the prompt into the model & completion tokens are tokens generated as a response from the AI model.
Token Limits
To prevent unwanted spend in our user's token balances, we have set a max limit of ~200 tokens per AI response. You can expand on the request or ask the AI for more detail at any time.
Free users
Free Studylab users get 5k AI tokens per month for free along with 15 free review questions per guide.
Premium users
Premium subscriptions get 60k AI tokens per month along with unlimited review questions per guide.
When do my tokens start counting?
Studylab only counts the completion tokens towards your token balance. Therefore input tokens & context tokens do not count towards your balance. This way its very easy to track the AI responses towards your token balance.
Token Balance
Your token balance is made up of 2 parts and is found at the top of the editor with the total number of tokens available (hover it to see the balance breakout).
Studylab Tokens: These tokens are refreshed every month - Free users get 5k, premium users get 60k
Purchased Tokens: This is the token balance for tokens you have purchased
When using the AI, Studylab will use the Studylab Token balance first and only use the Purchased Token balance when these are spent.
